Holiday on Gran Canaria during the European summer

Most people travel to Gran Canaria during the European winter, that means between November and March. We on the other hand decided to visit the popular Canary Isles during the summer months. Here are some photos from the holiday.

Beach in Amadores

We rented a car and drove around on the island. The first stop was in Amadores which has a pretty pretty beach.

Arguineguin

Not many tourists out and about in the summer. During the winter it's packed here.

Recommended: Pick up some Jamon Iberico before you head home

Jamon Iberico is the tasty and expensive Spanish ham. Buy some before you leave the country.

All big supermarkets have a great collection of jamon. A plate of Jamon Iberico will set you back €16-18 if you buy it on a restaurant. In the store they cost from 50 euros to 150 euros per kilo.

So expensive and tasty: The joy of bellotta ham

The distinction between Bellotta and regular Iberico.

Bellotta ham is often considered the finest ham in the world. I know that is a bold statement, but once you get a taste you will understand. Bellotta ham is a cured ham that is produced in Spain. No where else in the world will you find this type of ham being cured.

Bellotta ham is similar to Jamon Iberico as it is made from a ancient breed of black footed pigs. These pigs are only found in the southern provinces of Spain and Portugal.

Though these hams are similar, they are also very different. What makes Bellotta ham so special is that the pigs used to create it live in the oak forests of the Dehesa. Dehesa is an open range forest that allows the pigs to roam freely. This helps to keep the pig in good shape.
